Four years after the break, eS came back with a bang. The triumphant story of eS came to a brief halt in 2012 when the brand was put under hiatus by its parent company, Sole Technology, so that ST could focus on its other brands. They quickly followed this up with several other models that made a significant mark in the skating world, and soon, eS was the brand to have when you need to skate or just look like you know how. The Accel release signaled to everyone that eS wasn’t kidding around when it comes to skating. One of its first releases was the Accel silhouette, which most skaters from the 90s know as the footwear equivalent of the ubiquitous blue jeans. It belongs under the Sole Technology group of companies along with Emerica and etnies.ĮS is focused on producing technically-detailed skate shoes for the performance skater. The eS brand was conceived in 1995 by two former pro skaters-Pierre André Senizergues and Don Brown. These sneakers contain ample padding for doing impact skating, sufficient board feel for skating on flat ground and ledges, and enough support for the feet. Wearing skating shoes doesn’t mean you have to skate. Trade associations and local governments readied lawsuits. Sheriff's departments across the state, including in Los Angeles and Orange counties, said they wouldn't enforce the order. Videos of business owners pointing out the absurdities of the new restrictions went viral on social media. She wasn't the only one.Īcross California, the reaction to the governor's order was swift and negative. Johnson made the decision to defy Newsom's shutdown order and keep her business open. I wasn't going to lay off the majority of my staff again. "It was also three weeks before Christmas. "I knew that I would not be able to survive," she says. For Johnson, who'd spent the past nine months navigating ever-shifting public health orders that had brought her business to the brink of ruin, this was the last straw. It also meant that Brunch would have to close its doors right before the busy holiday season. In practice, it meant that places like San Luis Obispo County, where spare ICU capacity hovered around 30 percent during the worst of the pandemic, were lumped in with much harder-hit Los Angeles some 200 miles to the south. The idea was to preserve hospital capacity across a wider area so that the hardest hit counties could send patients to get medical care farther out of town. That included a ban on all on-site dining, indoor or outdoor. The governor's order divided up California's counties into five regions, and imposed a raft of new restrictions in any region where intensive care unit (ICU) capacity fell below 15 percent. That's when Newsom surprised the state with his regional stay-at-home order. Things were looking up again for Johnson until early December. Customers proved eager to return, giving Brunch some of its busiest days in months. Late September brought nicer weather and the return of limited indoor dining. A loan provided to her through the federal government's Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) helped keep her afloat as she was raking in about 60 percent of her usual sales. In late May, Johnson was able to open up for outdoor dining, although the summer heat and haze from wildfires limited its appeal. The following months proved to be tough but survivable. She was forced to cut her staff of 12 people down to just two. " the month of April I looked back and I made $4,000 when I typically make anywhere from $36,000 to $40,000 a month," she says. Johnson went from predicting record growth for her business to just barely hanging on. Restaurants in California had to close except for takeout and delivery service. Gavin Newsom followed up with his own statewide order a day later. On March 18, San Luis Obispo County, which contains Paso Robles, issued its first shelter-in-place order, requiring people to stay in their homes unless engaged in a few essential activities, like getting food or going to the doctor. That trajectory changed in March, when COVID-19 became the only thing in the world that mattered. "We were getting excited to go into spring and summer in the new, larger location and really kind of have this be our year and just explode," Johnson recalls. The slow winter months would soon be giving way to warmer weather and waves of out-of-town customers. Spring 2020 was supposed to be a good season for Brooke Johnson, a longtime resident and upstart business owner in the wine country town of Paso Robles, California.īrunch, her 2-year-old restaurant, had grown steadily throughout the latter half of 2019 at its new downtown location alongside the city's collection of other trendy restaurants, bars, and hotels. ĭeskgram runs on the following operating systems: iOS/Windows.ĭeskgram has not been rated by our users yet. At least Axl Rose can throw a punch, even if he has been ducking Greg Baker for months now. Young Elvis sang and danced pretty good for a white boy, but his guitar was little more than a prop, nobody confused him with the great thinkers of his day, and as best we can tell, he never beat anyone up, not even a wimpy music critic. Michael Jackson dons a studded leather jacket and we're supposed to believe he's gonna kick some ass. Off-camera Bogart was about as tough as quiche. If Da Vinci had been black, would we be issuing a stamp to commemorate the first white guy to make a credible sketch of the Mona Lisa? Maybe, if he was a baby boomer with bedroom eyes. And in retrospect, Elvis was not only one of the first, but also one of the best Caucasians to get the hang of devil music. It didn't hurt any that he had dreamy eyes and a pretty good voice to boot. Black people were still too dangerous to get close to, but a white southern kid who could produce a reasonable facsimile of black music's innate sexuality was just the tonic a nation of restless, horny adolescents was looking for. He came along at a time when white middle-class Americans were sexually repressed to the boiling point and facing the prospect of nuclear annihilation. He could sing, he could pout, he could shake his hips. The sad fact is that Elvis was (and still is) as overrated as he is dead. George Armstrong Custer) the status of hero and myth, a nation that elevates a second-rate actor incapable of independent thought to the highest political office in the land, would choose to honor the first white guy to competently plunder black music while ignoring the black men and women who invented the music in the first place? Is it any surprise that a nation that confers upon the slaughterers of its indigenous population (i.e., Gen. But of course the latter two were not white men and therefore are not worthy of consideration, despite the fact that their music, along with that of fellow bluesmen like Muddy Waters, Leadbelly, and Buddy Guy, was the real deal, the foundation upon which Elvis and tens of thousands of other paleface rockers squatted. If there were any justice in this world, the debate would not be between Fat Elvis and Skinny Elvis, but between, say, Robert Johnson and Willie Dixon. The concept of honoring Presley with a stamp is pandering to begin with, but the post office needs to do something to divert our attention from rate hikes. Is it any wonder we're confused as to who was the real King, the sleek, sexy, singing stud who represents us as we like to think we once were, or the corpulent, complacent, self-indulgent, pharmaceutical vacuum that is probably a lot closer to our true national character? The Japanese devoured our motion picture and popular music industries, and British humor (an oxymoron if ever there was one) dominates late-night public TV. In short order this has become the defining issue of the waning years of the millenium, a debate that has been raging for months and will in all probability continue long after the Postmaster General has adjudicated the matter. Postal Service, in their infinite wisdom, have seen fit to present us with only two options: Thin Elvis and Fat Elvis. Costello was even under consideration for such an award. The remainder were surprised to hear that Mr. citizens we somehow failed to contact, the burning issue was this: Which version of Elvis should the post office put on the stamp? If more than one table reference is listed in the FROM clause, the tables are cross-joined (that is, the Cartesian product of their rows is formed see below). The alternative involves storage of the DMLR result set anyway, within client code or with the repeated query returning what is to be modified. The FROM clause derives a table from one or more other tables given in a comma-separated table reference list.įROM table_reference ]Ī table reference can be a table name (possibly schema-qualified), or a derived table such as a subquery, a JOIN construct, or complex combinations of these. query, using a secret temp table in the implementation would normally be a reasonably performant approach. If the DMLR "value" could be used after a WITH. Follow-on operations that require multiple DML statements can be effected by a "WITH DMLR store-into-temp-table use temp-table for more DML" sequence. The WITH syntax makes avoiding repetition convenient and expresses reuse.Įven if a WITH-DMLR expression can only be followed by a single DML operation, it is useful for simple things like adding to an audit log. I suspect this is why PG makes a DMLR table-value only usable when it is part of a WITH query. Of course, DML with RETURNING ("DMLR" here) is not something that should be expected to have the same "value" when repeated within an expression. However, that simple view ignores an important side effect. I had thought that DML with a RETURNING clause would and should also function as a table-valued expression. Table and view names, table-valued functions, and SELECT queries can all be used as a "row set" within containing SQL. When using SQL, it is helpful for comprehension that a category of "table-valued expressions" exists. My thinking, and reason for liking the RETURNING clause feature (before understanding that limitation), was that it would simplify pure SQL operations that would otherwise require repetition of SELECT queries or client code written to collect a SELECT result set then run the DML. If something looks like a duck and acts like a duck in some way(s) but not all, an explicit caution, "This is NOT a duck.", is a favor to readers. The syntax railroad diagrams "mention" that fact by omission, but deducing that limitation requires a careful study. I suppose that should be mentioned in the documentation. At the very least, it would be nice if there was a way to get RETURNING results into a temp table without writing library client code to do so.ĭML statements cannot be used in subqueries. I only claim that the feature might be made more useful. It can only be used with a top-level DELETE, INSERT, or UPDATE statement." Hence, I am not claiming that SQLite v3.35.0 does not work as documented. I should add that the draft RETURNING doc says, "The RETURNING clause is not a statement itself, but a clause that can optionally appear near the end of top-level DELETE, INSERT, and UPDATE statements." This might be interpreted as "The RETURNING clause does not convert the preceding DML into a subquery. (I must admit that it was this latter utility that had me excited about the new RETURNING feature.) Especially welcome would be an incantation that makes DML with a RETURNING clause into something able to participate in containing DML statements. Sqlite> insert into t0log (whenCreated, what) with stuffer as (INSERT INTO t0(c) VALUES(random()) RETURNING b,c) select b,c Īt this point, I conclude that either: (1) I am doing this wrongly (2) my notion is ill-founded that adding a RETURNING clause to some DML makes that DML into something with further use like a subquery or table-valued function or (3) SQLite is not yet able to do more with RETURNING clause results than make them available to column value retrieval via the API.Īny thoughts as to which of those 3 cases applies is welcome. With stuffed as (select b,c from t0) select b,c from stuffed Insert into t0log (whenCreated, what) select b,c from t0 Sqlite> with stuffer as (INSERT INTO t0(c) VALUES(random()) RETURNING b,c) select b,c from stuffer I have tried mightily, with SQLite version 3.35.0 13:52:17, to get the RETURNING feature to produce something usable as a subquery that can be used in further (or "outer") operations rather then just producing a result set. See the with_query use and expansion at PostgreSQL SELECT.) This page on PostgreSQL SELECT substantiates my notion that DML with a RETURNING clause may be used as a subquery (in PostgreSQL at least. The fact that DML with a RETURNING clause produces results, just as select statements do, leads me to believe that inserting them into t0log should be possible. INSERT INTO t0(c) VALUES(random()) RETURNING b,c , I am trying to insert into t0log the results returned by this INSERT statement, , (lifted from RETURNING ), and having another table,Ĭreate table t0log (whenCreated text, what integer) You not only gain more points for clearing lines at higher speeds, but you can also get more points by using the soft and hard drops. Pressing up results in a hard drop, which instantly places the piece below its current position. Pressing down allows you to soft drop, which speeds up the current pace of your falling tetromino. You can also manually drop your blocks faster, regardless of the game’s speed. Also the better you play, the faster the blocks drop. It makes the game infinitely replayable because the order radically changes what you can do next. The order in which you receive blocks is completely random. When a line is filled with blocks, all those lines clear Arika/Nintendo via Polygon To better understand how to do that, it helps to know the game’s basic mechanics. To play longer and get higher scores, you need to creatively stack your blocks and remove as many lines as possible with each piece you lay down. If you run out of space and can no longer place any more tetrominoes, you top out and the game is over. To do that, you need to fill an entire line horizontally with blocks, causing those lines to disappear and giving you more space to stack. Your goal is to continually stack tetrominoes and clear lines as long as you can. The Tetris playing field is a 10x20 grid. It has a really cool 80s or rock and edgy feel to it that I really like and you can get creative w/ the colours you layer underneath it. I would definitely say try it out if you're looking for something fun and different for your nails. Plus the streaky coat will help it "crack" and "shatter" better to create the effect you want. You don't want it to completely cover the original colour b/c you want enough of the original colour to show through. Personally, I would say clean off the brush quite a bit before you apply a coat of Shatter. I was a bit skeptical that I would like the effect or that it would work but it does and I LOVE it! work really well! I got the nail colour at the salon but I didn't ask them to put the Shatter on b/c I wanted to experiment w/ it myself after. Normally, this is a colour that I love for Summer but would avoid in the Winter when I tend to choose darker colours but when you are using Shatter which is a black nail polish you want the first colour to be a high contrast to it so a bright and vibrant colour like pink, blue, yellow, orange etc. I went and got a polish change today at my local nail salon - I got OPI "It's All Greek To Me" which is a very vibrant magenta. On the bottle it says to use Shatter w/ the Katy Perry nail polish line.well that's just a marketing ploy it will work on any nail polish. I immediately grabbed a bottle and knew I wanted to try it out immediately! It's literally selling out EVERYWHERE almost IMMEDIATELY! Well last night I was at my local hair supply shop buying weft to make extensions for one of my brides and I saw the OPI Katy Perry display and she actually had a couple of bottle of the Shatter nail polish. Well I'm not the only one who wanted this nail polish. I figured not only would it be great for me and my manicures but I'd LOVE to incorporate it into a shoot in the future! It has a really cool 80s feel to it b/c it creates this black shattered or cracked effect on the nail. I don't know any of the colours in the line to be honest but I did notice the Shatter Nail Polish immediately and knew I had to have it. I do have an array of nail polish for shoots b/c it is sometimes necessary to do manicures on set and over the last yr I've found myself getting creative w/ the nails for editorial shoots.I'm literally becoming a one woman control freak - Makeup, Hair & Nails.God help me if I ever figure out how to work a camera!Īnyway, OPI came out w/ a limited addition Katy Perry line of nail polish. I don't even normally buy nail polish for myself b/c I just go and get manicures every 2 wks and they have an amazing selection of colours so why bother.although I will admit I frequently choose my nail polish by it's cute name! And after I saw all this polishes I’m really looking foward to see how will look OPI shatter.Even though I get regular manicures and I'm all about keeping my hands relatively nice and pretty (I figure b/c my hands and fingers are in ppl's faces all the time it's important) I don't normally blog about nail polish.I leave that up to my friend and nail polish fiend Ashley Readings. Some brands already have it.ĭAMN!! A lot of pink crackles =) I admit I knew only first 5 befour I started to wrote this post. OPI it’s not first who will have Pink shatter. Polish is in hot, darker pink and from photo I think it will have shimmer. Polish will be in stores in september and october. OPI decided to put out Pink Shatter that will be part of their every year Breast cancer LE. Today I’m gonna do two Pink Wednesday entries cuz next week I woun’t have internet and woun’t be able to post it □ |
